Native American Spirituality

Life is a story
shared by those with two-legs
and four
the winged in the air
children
and Mother
the Great Spirit
we
may be over-whelmed
by Great Snow
but like
the Grass
we do grow

Like a Holy Tree
I did see a Vision
which would fill
the hardest of men
with a heart of
flowers
and bird-song
though
the snow often
turns red with
blood
as men’s eyes
are darkened
with madness

I send
an offering
to the Spirit-World
with my voice
story-told
lighting the
peace pipe
with the bark
of the red-willow
these four
corners
West
North
East
South
the four quarters
of the World

Like an Eagle

Thunder black
giver-of-rain
White winds
cleansing
Red-spring
lights the
way
Summer yellow
power
to grow
all is Spirit
the thoughts
of Men
rising
like an Eagle
into the
Sky

Father
Mother-Earth
bison
roam
winged-birds
soar
children
run and play
nourished
babies
and animals
all fed
by the trees
and tall
grasses

The pipe
is Holy
to go
forth and
multiple
white cloud
smoke
a nation
of unity
twelve
eagle feathers
twelve moons
a grass
that never
breaks
take
the pipe
and breathe
sacred

The woman
young
and beautiful
long
dark hair
buckskin
dress
she will
lead you
where
you need
to be
with
sacred
steps
sacred
breaths
telling
a sacred song

Behold
her
Behold
the bison
galloping
away
snorting
there is
truth here
let us
smoke
together
the mouthpiece
of the One
above

HEY HEY HEY!

The Great Spirit
is
our Grandfather
he
has always
been
no one before
him
maker
of everything
he
sees everything
creator
of the stars
the day
and night
hear
me
lean close
I send
my voice

Mother
Earth
you
are most
merciful
to your
children
Behold!
White
Giant
Thunder
Beings
living
in the sky-light
ceiling
sun
continually
shining
down
upon
us all

HERE ME FOUR QUARTERS
of the Earth!
I am a relative
let me tread gently
on the
soft earth
give me the eyes
to see
and the strength to
do sacred work
May
I be like
you
with your power
may I have
a face of wind

This is my
prayer
all here on Earth
are tender
equal
children
to be held
in your arms
carefully
we walk
on the road
of Quiet
I am weak
but earnest

HETCHETU ALOH!

Let us
smoke this pipe
together
sharing
together
goodness
sent from
the Heavens above
