The Clod and the Pebble by William Blake

To love
means

to seek another person
being

to build on this
earth-rock face-wall
heaven not hell

this says the little
clod of clay
underneath the cattle’s feet

but pessimistic pebble
near the brook
retains its negative outlook
on love

as self-serviance
binding another to your
unworthiness
replacing solidary heavenliness
with hellish co-dependent existence

and this is why
the Clod
and the Pebble

live

on different level
