The Brewing of Soma by John Greenleaf Whittier

In every century the wood laid
the cauldron boiling bubbling sweet
mirth and myrrh and hoppy
soma hashish poppy
drip-drip droppy
last call-oquialism given
mug upended
casket opened
worm-winding do you mind don’t mind him

Drunk off of
artificial brotherly love
communion around the camp-fire
led to push and shove
priest or judge
screech or sludge
a retreat or carpenter ants wearing oak-aged gloves
hand-holds
stories un-told
parties grown cold
from the view of a paternal Cosmos
