Invictus by William Ernest Henley

The darkness of night
covers me
black like the depths
of an unfathomable pit

and I
stand here
and thank God
for my unconquerable soul

In this time and place
I do not
wince
I do not cry aloud

Chance reigning down
my body may bear
the marks
but I will not
be deterred
into uttering unspeakable words

I will not be cowered
by the years advancing
the Horror which fast approaches
me

no

I shall be

unafraid
straight as an arrow
to walk through Heavens gate

me

the captain of my soul
