Fog by Emma Lazarus

A thick fog full of color hardened over my awakened world
dampening all that is below
there is no mystery it is see-through
slick and gilded
no more grasslands

I see everything
even the birds and the rolling of the sea

But I know now what is sure
the tissue taught
my brain the cheat
here a reality so dull its unassumed

To the Orient I seek not inspiration
this is my home
no musky peaches or sugar-rich gum
No Scheherazade! Don’t tell me another tale
you can go home now

I will be the gossamer winged being
the pearly white half-genuine
the jagged and jaded peak

I will close the curtain
a thick fog on the sea
