A Sabbath Scene by John Greenleaf Whittier

Sabbath in this new-england town
a woman found
harassed
by a man claiming ownership over her
seeking to perform a question without
an answer
other than gospel scripture lawyer
bar-tender menders of cloth
live-stock traded-in Nature for severance pay

Today I did see the holy despicably
hoisted upon the shoulders of brutes
Today I did see a lens of clarity
displaying the obtuse perversions of a socialite
claiming kingdom over another person
as if she was a mere provision in his own
proclaimed constitution

Today I did see a scoundrel and fool
speak as if he made the rules cruel fate
devil-dancer
whatever you get away with Today
I can assure you Tomorrow will answer
