The Book of Tea

To find
the beautiful
in the everyday
is to enjoy
a cup of Harmony

I.

This medicine
this beverage
this libation
taking forth
inward
a moment
of Loving tenderness
the tea-leaves
brew
and I let my brain
settle

The tea
the flowing water
it comes into
me
cleaning me
stimulating me
subtly
relaxing
tense geometry
an embracement
of simplicity

Through this
cup
we do
bond
fraternity
of taste
where we can
all experience
delight
and serenity
in an instance
of simmer
not
haste

The man with
no tea
he is restless
agitated
running around
confused
distorted
please
won’t someone
give him a cup!
and
encourage
him
to sit with us

The man
with too much
tea
gulping
it down
misses
the point
of calmness
and now

Let us embrace
the greatness
of something
so small
so light
so simple
and elegant
and so realize
the true
powers
lying
within

Japan
be not a country
of barbarians
do not go
the Way of Death
but instead
take this cup
of humanity
in hand

Let us drink
to life
with our
porcelain
letting hatred
come to an end

In this cup
and pitcher
brew
we may let
East
and West
come together
renewed
splendor
no more
fighting no
more wars
only laughter
and love
and
another pour

Forget those
top-hats
pompestry
we’re here
to celebrate
the Heavens
the Sky
the Earth
the Sea
to be one
to be friendly
to be calming
sweetly
soothing
like honey

Those of you
with no reason
to sit
still
running
around
commotion
ill-will
we have a chair
for you here
at our little
table
please
come forth
when you are able

Forget the romanticisms
of the Orient
let your true
Oriental Spirit
emerge
and swirl
with the hot-waters
of coolness
and chill

Let us
sip this simplicity
drip by drip
running
past our lips
through our
minds
and stomachs
entering
our veins
and think
of beauty
not foolish things
