The Moral Basis of Vegetarianism by Mahatma Gandhi

“Not for the world
should you sacrifice
a moral principle.”

Despite the pros
or cons
of being
or not-being
vegetarian
or
carnivorous

it is clear
to me
that We
were meant
to eat
fruits and seeds
berries and leaves
and not
our fellow
animal-beings

it is only on the basis
of
us
acting on our moral instinct
that
we may remain vegetarian
in the face
of
a society
determined
to under-mine
the natural
order
of
sublime repose

and so
I do declare
in order to remain
a vegetable-eater
one
must
depend not
on this or that
health argument
but rather
on
the desire
to be at peace
with the world
with one-self
with fellow-creatures
and
the divine

With love in my heart
I nourish the mind
